The World's First Deodorant for People with Disabilities

CHALLENGE

Across the beauty and personal care industry, there was no deodorant product specifically designed for people with upper limb disabilities or visual impairment to use. Deodorant may seem like a trivial, mundane thing – until you cannot open the cap, press down on the aerosol, or apply it. People with disabilities also apply deodorant multiple times a day, on multiple parts of their body, but often cannot do that without help. That experience needed to change.

INSIGHT

Today, 60 million adults in the US live with a disability – that’s 1 in 4 people. Yet many products and experiences are still not designed with this community in mind.

IDEA

Degree Deodorant introduced the world’s first deodorant for people with upper limb disabilities and visual impairment, ensuring that the application process is accessible for all. The brand built an inclusive team of design experts, engineers, occupational therapists and people living with disabilities to create prototypes for multiple phases of testing. By introducing this prototype innovation, Unilever/Degree issued a rallying cry for more inclusive design across the industry through national/international media relations and partnerships with key NGOs.
